MOEI

Teach English in Cambodia & Thailand

Project Info

The program will follow a 1 + 4-5 format. 1 week of training and 4-5 weeks of class teaching at project location, in addition to online preparation sessions:

  • Online preparation sessions held before students travel to project location
  • 1 week training to provide participants with essential cultural orientation and teacher training for teaching English as a second language.
  • 4-5 weeks of in-class teaching. In-class teaching generally takes place for 3-4 hours per day from Monday to Friday. Class sizes tend to range from 10 to 40, and pupils are often aged about 12-20. Instruction is usually at the elementary or intermediate level. However, there is no typical Moei class, and participants may find that their experience diverges considerably from this description.

The aim of MOEI is to offer teaching opportunities to volunteers that benefit the local communities we work with. We firmly believe that young people can use education as a tool to break down any barriers that are holding them back.

We make sure that all our partner schools will benefit from having MOEI volunteers because we want all volunteers to have the maximum impact during their placement.

Moei provides teaching resources for all teachers and many pupils, usually in the form of a core textbook. You will become more familiar with the textbook and other resources during your teacher training in week 1. Photocopying, printing and all necessary stationary is included in the cost of the program.

All participants will find it an excellent idea to bring a laptop to Moei for use in class. Some classrooms have Internet connections, and even in those that do not a laptop is an invaluable resource.

Non-native English speakers may have or know of grammar books and textbooks that are particularly useful for language learning. These can certainly be brought for use in class and for sharing with other Moei teachers.

It is also good to bring songs that can be played in class, preferably through a laptop and maybe a small pair of speakers. Singing songs is a standard classroom activity.

Many pupils will want to know about their teachers’ life back home. Photos of friends, family and the places where participants live and study can be a great teaching resource.

MOEI volunteers will stay together in their placement city. The accommodation will be a chosen hotel which has everything needed for a comfortable stay; wifi, air con, en suite, breakfast, 24 hour reception/lobby, a great city center location, space to work/plan lessons and more.

The health and safety of all participants is our primary concern. With our 15 years of experience we have put in place procedures and practices to make sure you have all the support you need on your MOEI trip. There will always be a member of staff available 24 hours a day to assist with any issues. The local coordinator for your program will also be staying onsite with you, they’ll have all the information you need and be able to help with anything that comes up.

We will also assign a ‘teaching mentor’ to your group who can assist you with everything related to your teaching placement (lesson planning, activities, classroom management and more). The mentor will be an experienced teacher you can meet in person or via Zoom.

We advise all MOEI participants to visit their local GP or clinic to ask about which vaccinations (if any are necessary) and to find out all other medical advice about the locations you’ll be visiting. There are international hospitals in all locations, doctor surgeries and pharmacies – you should always have your insurance details to hand when visiting the hospital.

There are so many places to visit in both Cambodia and Thailand. You will always be making plans to explore the country in your free time. You can visit temples, night markets, indulge in street food, trek, meditate and much more! Click Below for more information about each country.
